Despite the fog this morning, it’s a fine and springy day here in Athens! Perfect for the second day of spring semester classes.

cone-of-uncertainty:

A year ago today, Athens, Georgia, and most of the Southeastern United States was in the grips of a strong winter storm that brought up to a half a foot or more of snow to most of the region. Schools and businesses were closed for nearly a week, as freezing temperatures in the wake of the storm lingered for multiple days and ice turned most roads into skating rinks. A year later, mild, Spring like temperatures and rain are common throughout the region.

We complete our series of 2011 editors’ picks with something particular to each desk: a favorite experience at the University, in Athens or with UGA friends. Some took place on the job, while others revolved around time with friends — another derived from an extremely unlikely source. All the while, these moments reinforced our love for the University and what we do at it.

The house was built as a private home in 1844 and in 1907 the Lumpkin family deeded it and its land to the University of Georgia (that land is now much of our South Campus.)

One condition of the family’s bequest was that the land would revert to the Lumpkin family if the University destroyed or moved the house. That’s why Lumpkin House now sits as a tiny and antiquated anomaly amidst behemoths like Conner Hall.

The earliest known telling of the tree’s story comes from a front page article titled “Deeded to Itself” in the Athens Weekly Banner of August 12, 1890. The article explains that the tree had been located on the property of Colonel William Henry Jackson. William Jackson was the son of James Jackson (a soldier in the American Revolution as well as a Congressman, U.S. Senator, and Governor of Georgia), and the father of another James Jackson (a Congressman and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia). He was the brother of Jabez Young Jackson, also a Congressman. (William Jackson was reportedly a professor at the University of Georgia and is sometimes given the title of Doctor; the nature of his military service and the source of the title Colonel is unknow.) Jackson supposedly cherished childhood memories of the tree and, desiring to protect it, deeded to the tree ownership of itself and the surrounding land. By various accounts this transaction took place between 1820 and 1832. According to the newspaper article, the deed read:

I, W. H. Jackson, of the county of Clarke, of the one part, and the oak tree… of the county of Clarke, of the other part: Witnesseth, That the said W. H. Jackson for and in consideration of the great affection which he bears said tree, and his great desire to see it protected has conveyed, and by these presents do convey unto the said oak tree entire possession of itself and of all land within eight feet of it on all sides.

It is unclear whether the story of the Tree That Owns Itself began with the Weekly Banner article or if it had been an element of local folklore prior to that time. The author of “Deeded to Itself” writes that, in 1890, there were few people still living who knew the story.

Older plaque at the site, weathered by exposure. The stone faintly details a passage from William H. Jackson’s deed to the tree.

The story of the Tree That Owns Itself is very widely known and is almost always presented as fact. However, only one person—the anonymous author of “Deeded to Itself”—has ever claimed to have seen Jackson’s deed to the tree. Most writers acknowledge that the deed is lost or no longer exists, if in fact it ever did.

In between my cheers and hugs and high fives, I nearly broke down in tears. For the first time in my life, I felt an unadulterated sense of pride in my team, my school, my state and my community. An air of joy seemed tangible as it echoed among the thousands of Bulldog fans who occupied the stadium and rejoiced the win. The moment moved me.

As I shared that moment with my best friends and peers as well as strangers in the parking lot, I understood the importance of this University in an entirely different sense. It’s not that I ever needed a football game to serve as a reminder; it simply felt like a special, long-overdue reward.
